HAPPY and HIPPO

HAPPY and HIPPO are  mnemonics students can use to analyze an historical document. It is especially helpful for IB and AP students as they are often required to discuss the influences of historical context, audience, purpose, and significance of a text:

HAPPY

H-Historical Context

What is the document saying?

What are the main ideas?

What was happening at the time this document was produced?

A-Audience

Who is the document intended for?

How does that affect the messages provided?

How would that affect how the information is received by various groups?

P-Purpose

Why is the author writing this?

Are there differences between overt and covert purposes? (Hidden messages?)

P-Point of View

Where is the author coming from?

What is his/her background (age, race, gender, religion, etc.)?

How does this affect the message?

Y-Why is the document significant?  How does the document relate to the prompt/discussion/time period?
